Aircraft electrical wiring is essential to the safe and reliable operation of modern aircraft. From avionics and navigation systems to communication, monitoring, lighting and cabin systems, aircraft depend on electrical wiring to transmit power, data and signals throughout the aircraft.

This beginner-friendly course provides a practical introduction to EWIS — Electrical Wiring Interconnection Systemsand is designed for learners who are completely new to the subject as well as aviation professionals who want to strengthen their EWIS awareness.

You will learn what an aircraft EWIS is, the main components that make up the system, and why aircraft wiring must be treated as a complete safety-critical system rather than simply as individual wires.

The course explores common forms of aircraft wiring damage and deterioration, including chafing, abrasion, cracked insulation, cuts, excessive bending, pinching, connector deterioration, heat, moisture, hydraulic fluid, chemical contamination, dust and debris.

You will also learn how maintenance activity performed near aircraft wiring can introduce damage. Tools, drilling debris, poor housekeeping, incorrect clamp restoration and unnecessary wire movement can all affect EWIS condition even when the maintenance task itself is not electrical.

The course introduces important EWIS inspection fundamentals, including the difference between a General Visual Inspection, or GVI, and a Detailed Inspection, or DET. Learners will become familiar with warning signs such as damaged insulation, chafing, loose supports, connector deterioration, contamination and indications of overheating.

You will also explore the fundamentals of correct aircraft wiring routing, separation and support, including the importance of approved routing, correct clamping, protection from vibration, heat sources, fluid systems and moving parts.

The course also reinforces the importance of using approved aircraft maintenance documentation such as the Aircraft Maintenance Manual, Wiring Diagram Manual, Standard Wiring Practices Manual, IPC and maintenance task cards rather than relying on memory or personal methods.

Human factors are also considered, including time pressure, distraction, poor housekeeping, incorrect assumptions, incomplete handovers and failure to use approved data — all of which can contribute to aircraft wiring problems.

By the end of the course, learners will understand the core EWIS safety principles of Protect, Inspect, Clean, Follow and Report, along with a stronger appreciation of why disciplined maintenance behaviour is essential for maintaining healthy aircraft wiring.

This course is designed as introductory EWIS awareness training. It provides a strong foundation for further learning but does not replace organisation-specific EWIS competency training, maintenance approvals, or authorisation.
